I am fond of visiting many wonderful places in and out of the country. And in all of this travels, I simply do a little documentation on my activities. It seems like it’s time for me to include this very charming pride of my hometown, The Cathedral Falls. We also have another hidden gem, the Sta Cruz Waterfalls.
While it’s practically true that what is suppose to be the most accessible places we are into, that’s the least to visit. The reason might be due to its accessibility, we prefer to do it last and go first to those with far locations.
This article is simply an information regarding my hometown. I don’t consider my activities here as an extraordinary one since I live here and grow up here.
This time, I will not go far. I already have this charm right at my doorstep. Every time our Municipality represents our province on any activity, Cathedral Falls is always one of its features. It’s really a pride of my hometown having this majestic waterfalls.
Cathedral Falls is easy to describe. It is because of its stone formation around the waterfalls, it resembles that of a Cathedral’s pillars that is why it was named Cathedral Falls. The stones are like the huge posts of a Cathedral, though they come in different shapes. It is also the boundary of the two Barangays of Kapatagan namely Barangay Cathedral Falls and Barangay Waterfalls.
I can say that Cathedral Falls is long been open to everybody however we can still say it is still a rare find by many. There are certain reasons making it not that attractive to tourists. One reason maybe, most of the tourists prefer to visit places not only for the view but for the activities around. For now, the local government is planning on the development of Cathedral Falls thereby making it attractive to tourists. But mind you, when you bring a friend to see this picturesque waterfalls, I am pretty sure they will be in awe by its beauty. For now, when in Kapatagan and had a chance to visit Cathedral Falls, you are very lucky to see it in its raw picture. As soon as development and activities be conducted, there will be some aspects that you will miss.
The Cathedral Falls today is simply a normal waterfalls with a submarine bridge connecting Barangay Cathedral and Barangay Waterfalls. Sometimes during heavy rains especially typhoons, water level rises making it unsafe to everybody within the area. But during normal weather conditions, the waterfalls offer pristine waters that’s also attractive for a swim. For now, swimming is not allowable since we don’t have lifeguards around. If you take the risks and go for a swim, be extra careful and be safe. Nevertheless, its water is clean and fresh. Please note that we do not advise anybody to drink from the waterfalls. It is much safer to drink from the right potable water sources.
Cathedral Falls is accessible via any mode of transportation. For now, the submarine bridge is not passable due to flood destruction. Only single motorcycle can cross the river so cars can park in Barangay Cathedral Falls. A short walk from the end of the concrete road. If you plan to commute, you may hire a habal-habal (single motorcycle) from the Kapatagan Town Center or near the Kapatagan Public Market to take you there. Fare depends on your negotiations with the drivers.
Kapatagan is a promising town of Lanao del Norte. Very much accessible from the airports of Pagadian City, Ozamiz City and Laguindingan. Regular bus trips of Rural Transit of Mindanao are having 24-hr service from Cagayan de Oro to Zamboanga City and Vice Versa. Commuter vans also are available at the Kapatagan Town Center.
You have a choice to stay in Kapatagan or take the night trips to the city. However, if you opt for the former, there are existing transient houses and pension houses around. Pensionne Jonica is located near the Church. We also have Rojean Pension in Barangay Maranding Annex. There are other pension houses in the next town particularly in Maranding, Lala, Lanao del Norte. If you prefer a hotel accommodation, we have MCC Hotel in Tubod, Lanao del Norte complete with amenities.
We also have various food choices in Kapatagan. At the Kapatagan Town Center itself we have the Betty Beans as a coffee shop. There are several bakeshops around town and Park n Go Bakery is open 24 hours. For food on the go, we have Emma’s Chicken House for roasted chicken and other chicken menus. Liberty Cafe is a snack bar open daytime and a diner in Meiluz Place. Who would have miss the small barbeque stalls and “Balut” vendors every night in front of the Kapatagan Town Center. In Maranding, we also have the Jollibee Maranding and SOY Café available for you.
It’s now time for you to see my beloved hometown. Come and visit Kapatagan, Lanao del Norte!
