TRAVEL GUIDE: APO ISLAND

When in Dumaguete, one must include a visit to Apo Island. Its location is south of Dumaguete City. Sharing to you our Apo Island Travel Guide for your reference.

How to get there?

  • an easy bus ride from Dumaguete will do. At the bus terminal, take a bus going South.
  • drop at the Malatapay port. If you don’t know where Malatapay is, just ask the bus conductor or the jeepney driver to drop you at the crossing Malatapay; fare is 25-30 pesos
  • travel time from Dumaguete to Malatapay will be approximately 30-45 minutes
  • from the highway, short walk following the concrete road going to the port (several stores along the highway, ask from them the way to the port)
  • register at the port and pay respective boat fees (Php 2,000 – small boats; Php 3,000 – big boats)
  • travel time from Malatapay to Apo Island will be 40 minutes to 1 hour
  • prepare to get wet, so dress accordingly
  • upon arrival, pay registration fees at Php 100 each
  • snorkel equipments  for rent at Php 100 each set
  • snorkel guide fee varies, may range around 300-600 pesos

If you plan on staying overnight at Apo Island, there are several resorts and homestays in the island. Just try to browse for rates and packages. As the place becomes famous, more resorts and homestays will possibly open so time to time, check for updates. To name a few;

  • Liberty Lodge
  • Mario Scuba Diving

Apo Island is also the best spot for scuba diving. They have the marine sanctuary where more than 600 species living in the area and home for lots of clown fish. Another best spot was the volcanic rocks with which you will see bubbles coming out of it.

What to bring:

  • sunblock
  • if you have rash guards, make sure to wear it since the water is cool and you cannot feel the heat of the sun
  • if you have the snorkeling gears so to avoid renting
  • aqua shoes since its a rocky beach
  • underwater camera is a must so you can capture the beauty of the place
  • food and drinks (you can also buy in the island)

Since it’s a marine protected area, let’s be aware of the do’s and dont’s that the guide will tell. Trash should be properly disposed.
