Burias Snake Dapa Island

MASBATE… Jumping at Snake Island

On our second day, we went straight to Dapa Island (also called Snake Island) after breaking camp in Sobrero Island. We spent the night in Sombrero Island by the way.

Snake Island was named after the sea snakes used to be abundant in the island. The island is inhabited, and one can go there by boat. It has a beautiful rock formations and fine sands in its banks. Due to the kind of rocks they have, sea snakes find its comfort living there. According our boatman snakes fled during summer season due to several visitors in the area. Sad to know though.

We positioned our boat not at the shallow area of the island. They have taken us to an area where we can swim and jump at the rocks. Some parts are shallow but most of the parts were deep. Oh well, when I say deep, I described it as I cannot stand barefoot on the waters.

We used our life jackets as floaters and swam towards the rocks. One of our boatmen showed us where to do the jump exactly. And the rest of the group followed. We each jump at the 3-meter height of rock landing at the turquoise waters glimmering under the sun.

After each of the members of the group did their jump, it’s my turn to do mine. At first, I am hesitant. Though I had done high jumps before, I still have hesitations in jumping this not that high rock. Oh well, if others did it, why can’t I. So I mounted my GoPro and queued my way to the edge. Voila! I landed safe at the waters.

Actually, I did jump 3 times. I enjoyed jumping the cliff. I was wearing life jacket while doing the jump just to make me comfortable in jumping. It was a short jump so I didn’t hurt myself with the life jacket.

Later we decided to go to the cave. I and Nina together with one boatman were on our way to the cave when we found a nice spot for picture taking. We stopped for a while to pose and we’re surprised with what we saw.

A sea snake is swimming towards us. Maybe a 2.5ft long stripe snake was gently swimming on one side of the rocks. It was heading towards Nina then suddenly it crossed towards me. I panicked and I don’t know how I did leaped on the rocks just to escape from the snake. Its presence really proved its name. Lol…

We’ve withdrawn from going to the cave because if we saw one coming from there, for sure there will be more waiting for us. I went back near the boat and just had chitchat with my friends and the boat captain. The rest of the group tried to walk towards the cave, yet they’re back immediately. When we’re up on the boat, we told them that we’ve seen one.

We left the island and head back to San Andres for Alibijaban Island; more than an hour cruise on the other side of the bay.
