Barranco Lima Peru

LIMA… The District of Barranco

There was a careful planning and scheduling of my trip to Peru. I arranged a whole-week package with Viajes Pacifico. I list all the places I want to visit and they made it possible for me. They have customized my trip and squeezed in all what I wanted to do.

Today is considered to be my Day 2 in Peru since my arrival last night was counted as my Day 1; so hectic that I need to start my tour to Pachacamac in the morning. Tour service arrived on time to pick me up. We had a quick glimpse of the city as our van drove around and our guide shared important information as well. On our way outside the city, we had the district of Barranco as our first stop.

Barranco is located along the coast just minutes away from Miraflores. It has coastal areas known for surfing, the cliff side for nightlife and the Colonial buildings still existing nowadays.

When we got off our van, I was amazed when I saw the La Ermita Church. It looks like new maybe because of the paint on the outside. As we walked closer, I saw the destroyed roofing of the church. As per our guide, no more mass is held due to the condition of the building. It was a small church made of stone walls. According to my guide, this church was built because of one incident wherein the fishermen who were lost at sea due to fog and could not find their way back to the mainland. They prayed and suddenly a mysterious luminous cross appeared. Then they headed to the direction of the cross. The location of the church now is the exact location where the cross appeared and saved the fishermen.

On the left side of the church is what they called the Bridge of Sighs. It was a wooden bridge crossing over a cliff. Below the bridge are parks and buildings. During daytime, you seldom see people roaming around, or stores that are open. Barranco is known for its lively nightlife. Restaurants, cafes, shops and even disco houses are open all night until morning especially during weekends. Our guide told us that if we plan to cross the bridge, since it’s our first, we must have to hold our breath and make a wish. If we did it, crossing from one end to the other without breathing, our wish will come true. I tried and i did it!

As much as I would want to experience what’s in here during night time, my schedule was so tight that I cannot squeeze this in. After today’s full-day tour, I need to get ready for a very early pick-up to airport. Hence, I didn’t have a chance to see Barranco at night.
