Tambomachay Cusco Peru

CUSCO… The Fountains at Tambomachay

The last destination of our tour was at Tambomachay. It was also a short drive over the hills near Q’enqo. Before reaching Tambomachay, you can pass by some adobe houses along the road. The Puca Pucara which guarded the city’s entrance was also along the way with its beautiful panoramic view.

We reached the place at 5PM and it was getting dark maybe because of the weather, a bit cloudy. When we got off our van, I was wondering where the fountains were. I thought of big fountains found at the Main Square, yet it was not.

After we had our Tourist Tickets stamped, we walked towards the hill. It was a low slope up on the side of the hill. On the both sides of the road were nice plants where you can find canals as well. The sound of the waters at the canals made the area feel fresher.

After few minutes of walk, we reached the fountain. It had nice piles of huge rocks with small canals in between. The temple had its very own trapezoidal niches as well, resembling works of the Incas. What’s amazing with this place was you cannot see where the water come from. It’s like it came from behind the piles of rocks.

They attribute this Tambomachay as the Inca bath. As per my guide, it was where the Inca cleanse their mind and body from all evil. That is why they considered this place a sacred one.

We spent quite some time at the Tambomachay; I climb the hill opposite the fountain to get a bird’s eye view of the place. It was nice. Several tourists climbed the place as well. After few minutes, we’re walking back towards our van. My co-tourists bought steamed corn; I want to buy as well unfortunately I cannot eat due to my braces. They said it was delicious. Oh well, I should have bought for me to have a taste of it.

In our van, our guide asked us if we wanted to taste the mint tea (munha). So we agreed to drop before heading back to Cusco.

Tambomachay was 8 kilometers from Cusco, so if planning to visit the place, you can join the tours usually scheduled in the afternoon. I think there were also commuter buses passing along the area as I have seen one.

I asked our guide to drop me at Plaza de Armas as I had a dinner at Tunupa by 7 pm.
