During the Japanese occupation in Batanes, several tunnels were dug and being made storage for military weapons. Some of the diggers were children. Now, these tunnels are being opened for tourism.
A short distance from Fundacion Pacita lies the Japanese Tunnel. When we went there, you cannot locate the entrance if you’re not familiar with it. We just literally walked on the cogon grasses leading us to the mouth of the tunnel. I don’t know now if they paved it already.
We went into an entrance on one side of the mountain and came out on a 45-60 degrees angle climb in order to reach the other side. It was quite a challenge but we enjoyed the adventure.
There are lots of rooms in the tunnel, maybe used as quarters, storage and sleeping areas by the Japanese during the World War II. Until now, these tunnels are still there, with bats and other insects residing.
It is safe inside, flashlights are provided by our tour guide. Maybe snakes were being driven away before we went inside (you can’t help but think of possible creepy crawlies and snakes since caves are their favorite resting areas). But in this case, since these are one of the tourists attractions, authorities might as well ensure safety of the area.
