SURIGAO DEL SUR… The Grand Tinuy-an Falls
One of the must-visits in Surigao del Sur is the beautiful Tinuy-an Falls. It’s location is an hour or two travel time at the mountains of Bislig City. Though Tinuy-an Falls has its own identity, we cannot discount some of the descriptions to be like mini Niagara Falls. Far from being it, maybe because of its wide waterfalls that may resemble as Niagara.
We drive to Tinuy-an Falls early morning of January 5, 2017. Most of the roads, concreting are under construction. Also, quite bumpy and muddy due to the rainfall a night before. Traversing through the dirt road towards the mountains, we arrive at Tinuy-an Falls.
Due to continuous rainfall a night before, the water level at Tinuy-an Falls rises. Literally, the water current is tremendous and strictly no swimming anywhere. For us to expect a calm cascades, it is a big disappointment.
As what we have seen from the Internet photos of Tinuy-an Falls, we are also expecting to walk near the waterfalls. We are also excited to swim together with the raft. But since there is a low pressure during our visit, continuous rainfall increases the water level of the falls. We can’t complain anyway, we just have to enjoy our visit.
Since we cannot swim, all we do is to take lots of photos. Several locations such as the entrance, the signage, the cottages and the waterfalls. One guide approaches us if we want to climb the third level of the waterfalls. At first, we worry on our safety. However our guide guaranties our safety, only then that we decide to climb up the third falls.
Climbing the third falls is quite easy due to the aid of the steel stairs mounted at the side of the waterfalls. The only struggle is the climb yet it is manageable. Reaching the second level of the waterfalls makes me think of the beautiful views on the Internet photos. I wish we came on a sunny week.
We cannot go far at the second level since the water current is strong. Our guide looks for a place to pose for photos having the muddy water as our background. When our guide asks us if we want to proceed to the third level, we are hesitant at first. However, another tourist went there straight, we then decided to proceed too.
The water is so scary. We are literally walking at the edge of the waterfalls when climbing the third level. You will really feel the current, you may think of holding on to your life or else you’ll be found somewhere else.
The overall experience is exciting. Thrilling adventures add up to the overall impression though we did not achieve the photos similar to that of the Internet. On the brighter side, we are lucky we have experienced Tinuy-an Falls on a rainy day. Who would have thought we have encountered that when in fact all we are praying is a good weather and a calmer waterfalls.
There should be a reason to come back. Now we know the factors to consider when coming to Tinuy-an Falls, should be a weeklong sunny day.
