Tukon Church Batanes

BATANES… Tukon Chapel – Our Lady of Mount Carmel

From the welcome arch of Basco, we drive our way going to the South. Few minutes of driving, we make a left turn heading to the mountain.

A bit of excitement is felt since we didn’t know what awaits us there. Along the way, all we can see were tall grasses and some bushes on each side of the road. But after a few minutes, a stunning scenery caught our eyes; A panoramic view of the ocean.

Then we make a stop and alight our van. It is enthralling when we see this Chapel on the hill made up of stone – Tukon Chapel. Such a perfect venue for weddings.

This is the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Build by the Abad Family for the residents of Tukon for them to celebrate the mass near the area instead of going downtown.

It is a very beautiful Church on the hills overlooking the West Philippine Sea on the left and the Pacific Ocean on the right. Tukon Chapel also offers  a fabulous view of Mt. Iraya on the other part of the island. Lush greens and vegetation were abundant in the area that adds to its refreshing beauty.

Its architecture resembles the stone houses of Batanes. Though it’s a new construction, it really blends in what Batanes was known for.

Tukon Chapel is set to withstand the calamities in Batanes, hopefully through the test of time, this will still be standing despite the weather threats. It is nice to see such creations though this is no longer part of Batanes heritage, building this uses modern technologies and materials.
