Our adventure to one part of the island ends here in Chavayan…
Enough of the mesmerizing Chamantad – Tinian View, we drove further going down the quite steep narrow road to the Heritage Village of Chavayan.
This village was nominated to be one of the UNESCO Heritage Site. It is a tiny village home to stone houses more than 100 years old. Same with Savidug, thatches of cogon grass were used as roofing and some walls were also being plastered.
The village is quaint; it is so quiet. Their means of livelihood is fishing, farming and livestock. There are lots of trees near the area, they also have great seashore ideal as a fishing village.
At the entrance of the village, there’s a building for the weavers. They have showcased their local handcrafts. At the displays are all Ivatan crafts, among which were indigenous to the place. Native to them are the sun/rain protector made of abaca, sorry I forgot the name, were also displayed there.
Inside the village, we had an opportunity to get inside to one of the houses. We saw the portion of the kitchen. A typical kitchen comparable to our kitchen back at my province where you can see the wood-burning stove. I was curious on what are those hanging above, as per our guide, it was dried meat.
We really thanked the owner for her generosity on showing us portion of their home. It is really innate to us Filipinos our hospitality.
We roamed around the small village. They have a small Chapel dedicated to Santa Rosa de Lima. We walked further near the bay area. To describe, looking at the bay where you can see the mountain on the right and the sea on the left, it was simply marvelous.
Chavayan is the last Barangay in the area reachable by public transportation. On-going road concreting in the area is in progress to cater the needs of the locals mainly on transporting their produce to markets; easy and convenient for the residents as well as the tourists.
